"GREAT WHITE" HERON
An interesting bird. According to my bird books and some reference material on the net, some call this a separate species rather than grouping it in with the Great Blue Heron. Other sources call it a color variation of the Great Blue Heron. Either way, kind of neat to have one at Paynes Prairie. The sources also pretty much all say that it is restricted to extreme South Florida. Guess this one just wanted to see the rest of the state, one wetland at a time. Peterson Field Guide calls it a "Great White" Heron, noting the parentheses. La Chua Trail. Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park.
